Pengertian Narrative Text
Pengertian narrative text adalah rangkaian cerita dari waktu ke waktu yang dijabarkan secara bertahap. Cerita yang disajikan berupa legenda dan cerita nyata yang direkayasa, dan dongeng.
Dari asal katanya, narrative dalam bahasa Indonesia berarti narasi yang mengandung makna “a series of events” atau “serangkaian peristiwa”. Sedangkan text atau “teks” memiliki makna tulisan.
Jadi, narrative text adalah sebuah teks atau cerita mengenai serangkaian peristiwa yang saling berhubungan, yang disajikan secara berurutan dari awal ke akhir cerita baik secara lisan maupun tulisan, dan/atau dengan gambar (bergerak) yang juga disajikan secara berurutan (kronologis).
Tujuan Narrative Text
Purpose atau tujuan narrative text adalah untuk menghibur para pendengar atau pembaca.
Struktur Narrative Text
Struktur narrative text meliputi :
- Orientation adalah pendahuluan atau pembuka yang berisi adegan pengenalan para tokoh, waktu, dan tempat dalam cerita.
- Complication adalah pemunculah konfik atau masalah dalam cerita.
- Resolution adalah solusi atau penyelesaian konflik/masalah.
- Re-orientation adalah ungkapan – ungkapan penutup yang menunjukan berakhirnya suatu cerita. Re-orientation ini memiliki sifat opsional yakni tidak selalu ada dalam narrative text.
- Coda adalah perubahan yang terjadi pada tokoh dan pelajaran atau nilai moral yang bisa diambil dalam cerita. Coda juga memiliki sifat yang sama seperti re-orientation yaitu bersifat opsional.
Unsur Kebahasaan
Adapun unsur kebahasaan yang terkandung dalam narrative text adalah :
- Noun (kata benda) digunakan untuk kata ganti orang, hewan, atau benda dalam cerita. Contohnya : stepmother, the dwarfs, carriage, dan lain-lain.
- Past tense (kata kerja lampau) dalam narative text menggunakan kata kerja lampau (verb 2). Contohnya : knew, got, gave, dan lain-lain.
- Time connective adalah kata penghubung waktu guna mengurutkan kejadian. Contohnya : after, after that, before, dan lain-lain.
- Action verbs merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan peristiwa atau kegiatan. Contohnya : stayed, climbed, wrote, dan lain-lain.
- Saying and thinking verb merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan pelaporan atau ujaran. Contohnya : said, told, thought, dan lain sebagainya.
Ciri-Ciri Narrative Text
Berikut merupakan beberapa ciri-ciri dari narrative text.
- Fokus pada satu tokoh atau pelaku. Umumnya individual sehingga biasa menggunakan kata ganti seperti “I, we, she, he”.
- Sering menggunakan past tense baik itu simple past tense, past continuous, atau bentuk past tense lainnya.
Menggunakan dialog untuk mengajak pembaca berimajinasi sehingga ceritanya terlihat lebih jelas dan nyata. - Karena berurutan (kronologis), maka biasanya juga menggunakan kata sambung (conjunction) agar cerita terlihat runtut atau urut.
Jenis-Jenis Narrative Text
Berikut merupakan beberapa jenis narrative text.
1. Folklore atau Folktale (Cerita Rakyat)
Cerita rakyat atau folktale adalah cerita kepercayaan yang telah lama ada dalam masyarakat. Cerita ini berasal dari para nenek moyang dan disampaikan dari mulut ke mulut. Cerita rakyat masih terus diceritakan hingga kini.
2. Legend (Legenda)
Legend (legenda) adalah cerita yang sudah lama tersebar luas di masyarakat dan diyakini sebagai sebuah sejarah atau dipercaya sebagai hal yang benar terjadi di masa lalu, umumnya dipercaya karena adanya bukti peninggalan yang masih tersisa.
3. Myth (Mitos)
Mitos adalah cerita yang berhubungan dengan hal gaib, menceritakan asal usul suatu kebudayaan, yang biasanya dihubungkan dengan makhluk gaib seperti dewa dan sebagainya.
4. Fable (Fabel)
Fabel adalah cerita yang menggunakan tokoh hewan di dalamnya. Tujuan fabel adalah untuk menghibur para pembaca saja, disamping itu fabel juga mengandung nilai moral yang ingin disampaikan, misalnya sikap tolong menolong dan lain sebagainya.
5. Short Story (Cerita Pendek)
Short story atau cerita pendek adalah cerita yang bersifat fiktif atau hanya berupa khayalan. Siapapun bisa membuat cerita dalam bentuk short story ini karena berasal dari hasil imajinasi seseorang.

Cinderella
